The Primary Section Stories – 13/05

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have been blessed with lovely weather these last few weeks. Our playground is a sun trap and gets beautifully warm. Please remember that children are very active and easily get overheated. Make sure they are in summer clothes such as shorts and t-shirts with a jacket on top that they can easily take off when they feel hot. Please apply sunscreen in the morning before they come to school if you are concerned about sunburn. They will definitely need it in a couple of weeks when the temperatures rise even further.

Just in case you hadn’t already heard, our amazing class 1 students raised 1546 euro for the Orangutans. They were able to watch Mr Sunil make the bank transfer on screen in their classroom and duly received certificates in response. What a wonderful example of students taking action to save wildlife.

Thank you to every single family who supported this, especially the class 1 families.

Last week was our Class 5 assembly when they explained ‘fair testing’ to all the other students. They explained it really clearly and gave a lot of examples. Their presentation skills are really getting good. They spoke clearly and slowly so we could all understand and many of them knew all of their words off by heart. Well done!

Today we had a story from Ms Nicholls, our ‘storyteller’ music teacher. She really brings the stories to life and has the students totally enchanted. Today the story was about a Mermaid and it was a traditional Irish tale. This was followed by class 3 singing a song they learned in Dutch with Ms Kristien about fairytales. They had lovely costumes and sang really well. Another impressive performance by everyone.

Last week the students also planted out some pots with strawberries, mint and other interesting food related plants. These were all donated by the Maudsley family in remembrance of their grandmother Lynn Martin who used to work at the school. Which was very kind and greatly appreciated. The plants are already growing well. The students are taking turns to water them.

This week the MOS Vlaanderen team visited our school and set up some really interesting outdoor activities for staff to try out in our staff meeting. We had a wonderful time and learnt a lot. We will be having another training session with them on the 31st May.

Our Parent workshop specifically for class 4 and 5 parents had to be postponed and will now take place this coming Wednesday 18th May at 6.00pm. The link is –

International Day is coming up fast. 21st May starting at 10.00. Our students have put such a lot of effort into their stalls. Class teachers will have been in contact to let you know what the children need to bring. They have also been practising their performances. I know one teacher has asked the parents to get involved as well. We really appreciate you joining in. We look forward to seeing you here on the day. Any profits made from the sale of food or tickets will go to the Parents Association in order to support the school with projects. A small amount will be going to the house teams to help fund their activities.

Once again please remember that holidays or days out in term time are not permitted. The children get very upset when they miss out on events, haven’t carried out the same work as the others or let their classmates down by missing a performance. Research has shown that days off greatly disrupt the students’ learning. If your child really does need leave other than for sickness, you must write to me to request permission to take the day off school.

There have been some difficulties arranging buses for the day trips this term. They are in very short supply and the bus companies haven’t been able to get back to us. We believe that a school organised day trip really enhances the students’ learning and that they are important, so we are making every effort to find a solution to this.

Enjoy the good weather and have a wonderful weekend.
