The Secondary Section Stories – 23/02/2024

Secondary Newsletter 23/2/2024

To our valued parents and ISBe community members,

The period before the midterm break was a busy one for students in classes 10 and 12, who were in the process of sitting for their mock exams. They have now entered a five-week preparation period before their official exams. During this time, they will have ample opportunity to review and revise their coursework in preparation for the official tests.

It is my pleasure to share with you the news that Arisha, a student in Class 6, has accomplished a remarkable achievement. Arisha emerged victorious in the “Ethias Tour Junior Molenbos Nijlenon” GIRLS SINGLE U13 1 (13.5 – 13.1) tournament during the recent holidays. This win has solidified Arisha’s position as the best racket in Vlaanderen among girls up to the age of 13. It is evident that Arisha has put in a lot of effort and dedication to achieve this success.

Meanwhile, students in class 11 were engaged in an EU crash course organized by Understanding Europe. This was an intensive workshop designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the European Union and their role as citizens within it. Through a series of interactive activities and discussions, students had the opportunity to explore various topics related to the EU, including its history, institutions, policies, and challenges.

In addition, a speech competition named ISBe Talks was held for interested students. The competition was modeled after the renowned TED talk, and participants were required to deliver a speech on  topics such as purpose, animals, seasons and fake news . A total of 21 students participated, and after a rigorous selection process, nine finalists were selected to compete in the final round, which will be held on March 9th during the Open Day. We are excited to welcome you to the Open Day to witness the final round and support our finalists. During the Open Day, the school community will get an opportunity to view all the classrooms and witness first-hand the outstanding teaching and learning that happens at our school. We hope you will be able to attend and see our wonderful school in action.

Finally, four students from class 11 participated in the European Youth Parliament, which took place this week. This was a great opportunity for these students to showcase their talents and skills in a competitive setting, and we are proud of their achievements. We believe that such experiences help our students develop valuable skills such as critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork, which will serve them well in their future endeavors.

Additionally, we are thrilled to announce that ISBe will be holding its annual Music Talent Show on March 19th. The show is open to all students in both primary and secondary schools, and we welcome solo and group performances. The only requirement is that the performances are well-rehearsed and of high quality. The winners of the Talent Show will have the opportunity to participate in the end-of-year show in June, where they will showcase their talents in front of the school community. We look forward to seeing the incredible talent that our students have to offer.

Speech Competition Updates from Ms. Smilkstein:

This year‘s house speech competition has proved to be a very big success for the initial rounds stage.

This week,we had students on a volunteer basis from the three Houses presenting their finest public speaking skills to a middle/senior school audience in the hopes of making it to the final on the 9th of March, which is also Open Day. After intense competition between students of each House, ultimately, the finalists were chosen based on the decision of four judges whose scores averaged together to reveal the top two from each House. An additional three students, irrespective of House, have also made it into the finals.

The winner of this event will walk away with a voucher of €40 +100 House points, while the runner-up will get a €20 voucher and 50 House points.

Good luck to all finalists. We look forward to seeing what you will be delivering for us on Open Day!

Warm regards,
