Playing the Ocarina

In music lessons, Class 2 has just started learning to play the ocarina! The oca-what?? O-CA-RI-NA! It is a wonderful flute-like instrument that is small and round with 4 holes (sometimes more) to play all sorts of melodies.
The name of this instrument actually comes from Italian and means “little goose”. All the way back in 1853, there was a young Italian teenager called Guiseppe Donati. He invented a type of flute made out of clay and in the shape of a submarine. He showed it to his friends and together they perfected the instrument and gave it the name “ocarina” because of the sound it made. This instrument even features in the popular Zelda Ocarina of Time computer game!
You can listen to the famous tune here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKrhPHSuy4Q
The children from Class 2 are really enjoying learning to play this lovely instrument. We look forward to performing something for you soon!
All the best,
Ms Nichols
