Secondary Newsletter 14/11/2025

To our valued parents and ISBe community members,

I hope you and your families enjoyed a restful mid-term break and the good weather we have been having. We returned with great enthusiasm and immediately launched into an exciting Literacy Week.

Throughout the week, C6-C12 took part in a variety of literacy-focused activities. We began with a theatre event in which teachers spoke about books that have inspired them, encouraging students to reflect on and discuss their own reading experiences in English classes. Students then tackled an essay-writing challenge based on the prompt “Ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “and savages of both kinds…”, with each class contributing a well-crafted paragraph to their House essay. They were reminded to avoid clichés, ensure cohesion, and very importantly leave zombies out of their narratives. We also celebrated the rich linguistic diversity of our community with a special focus on foreign languages during the week. Finally, we wrapped up Literacy Week on Thursday with a text transformation performance in the theatre. Mixed-year groups translated and re-imagined one of Shakespeare’s sonnets into either a rap or a short play. Awards were presented to the winners for both writing and performance, and it was a pleasure to see such creativity and teamwork from all students involved.

Yesterday, C7 enjoyed a Humanities trip to Antwerp, where they visited the Plantin-Moretus Museum and explored the historical centre. The visit gave them a fascinating insight into the early development of printing and bookmaking, allowing them to see one of the world’s oldest printing presses and understand the important role Antwerp played in communication and culture. The walking tour through the city further helped students link their classroom learning to real European history. Thank you to Mrs Doman and Mr Jorre for accompanying them.

Before the break, We also proudly celebrated strong performances at the Marbella Football Tournament, where the boys’ team earned second place and the silver medal. Congratulations to Manoah for being named Most Valuable Player and to Mr Ruben for receiving the Best Coach award. Please find Mr Ruben’s and Mr Koenraads article below:

Schools Football World Cup
On Thursday, 23 October, our excited Young ISBe Lions boys team boarded the
plane to Malaga to compete in their first international football tournament.
We were staying again in the cosy BlueBay Banus hotel.
On Friday our boys had their first two practice games which immediately gave them
a good impression of the competition and beautiful warm temperatures to expect in
the followings days.
In the afternoon we had the opportunity to visit the beaufitul city of Malaga.
On Saturday our boys had to play 3 games of which they won 2. On Sunday we they
had 2 more games and qualified for the big final.
The final was very competitive, which unfortunately for us, ended in a 1-0 loss
against the Marymount School from Rome (Italy).
Overall our boys had a fantastic tournament and we went home with 3 prices: 2nd
place, MVP and Best Coach!

It was a wonderful trip, blessed with fantastic weather: 29 °C, clear blue skies, and a
pleasantly warm sea – what more could one wish for! Alongside the matches, we
enjoyed a delightful excursion to the beautiful medieval city of Málaga. In the
evenings, we also visited Puerto Banús, the glamorous marina just outside Marbella.
The students were amazed by the luxury yachts and the dazzling collection of cars
from Kuwait, Germany, the Netherlands, Monaco, and beyond — some of which you
rarely see anywhere else in Europe.
Despite the typically Spanish touch of unpredictability, both the organisation and the
accommodation were excellent!

As we look ahead, Block Exams are approaching, and students already received all the information to support their preparation. We also warmly invite you to join us for our upcoming Festival of Lights celebration on the 29th of November, where we look forward to seeing many of you and sharing an enjoyable community event together.

Kind regards,

Warm regards,
