Dear Parents and Carers,

We kicked off the new half term with our Literacy week. Each class arranged special activities with a literacy focus. 3 of our classes visited the local Aartselaar library which is always very welcoming and pleased to see us. We hope to visit them again for world book day in the spring.  Each day focussed on one of the aspects of literacy such as speaking, listening, drama, reading or writing. Ms Mac set up additional activities in the library and undertook additional lessons where the students were able to taste different genres of books. She also set up book character hunts and special displays to enhance the week. We finished the week with a book character dressing up day and each class shared some of the learning they had done in the Friday assembly.

On Monday we held a whole school Armistice assembly where we remembered those who sacrificed their lives in World War 1 and all wars since for the freedom of others. Primary students sang ‘Wear a Poppy today’ and Secondary students read the Poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ in recognition of the battles that took place in the Flanders area. We listened to the ‘Last post’ and then held a minute’s silence.

This week we have moved onto Anti-bullying week. It is very important that students learn about bullying, that it is not OK and how to deal with it if it is happening to them. All schools experience some bullying but it is important to acknowledge it and deal with it effectively. Some classes, Class 3 in particular, participated in an online anti bullying assembly on Wednesday. Today we have had ‘Odd Shoe’ day where we recognise it is OK and it can be fun to be different. Class 1 presented an assembly on anti-bullying. Helping to share this important message.

Students took part in the International Maths Olympiad on Wednesday. There were 42 students signed up for it this year. Ms Georgiana kindly came in to support us with the exam. Each year we get a little more interest. The science Olympiad will be in December.

Unfortunately I have been out of school this week so I would like to express my thanks to everyone in school who has worked to keep things running smoothly.

Warm regards,

Sharon Short
